The Future of Healing: Platelet-Rich Plasma, Stem Cells and Lipogems

As regenerative medicine continues to grow in popularity and success, patients are realizing the potential of living a life without pain. The noninvasive treatments of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), stem cells and Lipogems are helping patients heal without the need for orthopedic surgery altogether.

Differentiating PRP and Stem Cell Treatments

PRP:

Our blood is made up of four main components: plasma, red cells, white cells and platelets. For PRP, we are concerned about isolating the platelets which are essential in the process of coagulation. Additionally, with the help of hundreds of proteins known as growth factors, platelets are instrumental for healing at the site of damaged tissue. The concentration of growth factors and platelets in PRP are upwards of 10 times of that found in regular blood. It has shown that when PRP is injected into damaged areas of the body it helps to reduce inflammation, stimulate cell repair, and accelerate tissue and wound healing.

Though the process sounds daunting, PRP treatments are as simple as an in-office blood draw. At your appointment, our nurse will draw between one to two ounces of blood from your arm. This blood is then processed through a centrifuge machine which separates the red blood cells from the PRP. After the PRP is extracted it is are injected into the damaged area for the healing to begin.

Stem Cells:

Stem cells are found in many organs and tissue throughout the body, including the brain, heart, liver, bone marrow and skeletal muscles. They differ from other cells in the body for two main reasons: first, they are unspecialized cells with the ability to renew themselves through cell division; second, under unique conditions they can be introduced to a specific area and become specialized cells.

Diving a little deeper, there are two main types of stem cells: embryonic and adult.Adult stem cells are found in their tissue of origin, referred to as a “stem cell niche.” Embryonic cells—as their name suggests—are found in three to five-day old embryos. For the purpose of regenerative medicine, adult stem cells hold the most potential for healing and pain relief. In fact, recent studies have also successfully made cartilage, skin and bone tissue from adult stem cells, opening up a world of possibilities in sports medicine and chronic pain treatment.

Introducing Lipogems

What is Lipogems? Lipogems is an FDA cleared system that is used to take a patient's own body fat (known clinically as adipose tissue) and reinject it back into an area of damaged or injured tissues to successfully support a healing environment. This procedure is used to help aid in the repair, replacement, and reconstruction of the damaged area.

This treatment is ideal for many patients with an orthopedic condition that is unable to undergo a major, invasive surgery, and/or would like another option to a major, invasive surgery.

The Benefits of PRP, Stem Cells and Lipogems:

The future of regenerative medicine is truly at a pivotal and revolutionary time. Patients have had unprecedented relief and success after undergoing treatments with PRP, stem cells and Lipogems. These regenerative therapies are most commonly used to treat conditions such as:

  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Chronic degenerative joint disease
  • Tendonitis
  • Joint pain
  • Ligament and muscle injuries
  • Partial tendon tears
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Labral and rotator cuff tears

Who is an Ideal Candidate?

There is still no definitive consensus on the ideal age range of potential candidates for PRP, stem cell therapy or Lipogems; that said, the treatments are safe, have been shown to have no adverse side effects and require nothing of the patient except time and patience during their one to two- hour office procedure. Generally, men and women of good health who are experiencing consistent discomfort from a chronic pain issue or injury are suitable for regenerative treatments.

Now more than ever before there are solutions for your daily pain. If other orthopedic treatments have failed to provide you with the relief you need, schedule your consult with Dr. Anthony Giuffrida at Cantor Spine Institute. With our safe, cutting-edge treatments, we look forward to providing you with options that yield results and the profound pain relief you deserve.
